Trump's Economic Policies Leave Black Americans Behind

Trump brags about federal job cuts, rollbacks that are the hurting Black economyIn a recent speech at the White House, President Donald Trump touted his administration's efforts to boost small businesses and create jobs. However, a closer look at the numbers reveals a stark reality: many of these policies have had devastating effects on Black Americans, exacerbating unemployment and economic inequality.

Unemployment Rates Mask a More Complex Reality
While Trump celebrated the low unemployment rate, which reached its lowest level since 1969 in January, the numbers tell a more nuanced story. The jobless rate may be low at 4.3%, but it doesn't account for the affordability crisis facing many Americans, particularly Black Americans who struggle to afford basic necessities like healthcare and housing. In fact, the Black unemployment rate is a staggering 7.1%, higher than it was during the global coronavirus pandemic in 2021.

Federal Job Cuts Hit Black Workers Hard
Trump's administration has made significant cuts to the federal government workforce, which has had a disproportionate impact on Black workers. Many of these jobs were related to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives or roles perceived as such. For decades, the federal government has been a major driver of economic growth for Black Americans, expanding the middle class. However, Trump's policies have reversed this trend, leaving many former federal workers struggling to find comparable work or any work at all.

Small Business Lending Falls Short for Black-Owned Businesses
Despite claims of record lending for small businesses under Trump's administration, the numbers indicate that Black-owned operators have been largely excluded. In fact, federal lending to these businesses nearly doubled under the Biden-Harris administration, highlighting a stark contrast in priorities between the two administrations.

As the economy continues to recover from the pandemic, it's clear that Trump's policies have left many Black Americans behind. The numbers paint a picture of economic inequality and unemployment that demands attention and action from policymakers. It's time for a more inclusive and equitable approach to economic growth that benefits all Americans, not just those at the top.
