Breaking Barriers and Building Empowerment: The Story of Black on Black Market

Founder of Virginia’s First and Only Marketplace That Sells All Black-Owned Products Celebrates One Year in BusinessIn a historic milestone, Virginia's first and only marketplace dedicated to showcasing Black-owned brands has celebrated its one-year anniversary. Founded by Tree Kelty, Black on Black Market is more than just a retail space - it's a testament to the power of collective economic empowerment and self-determination.

A Vision Born from Adversity
Despite facing early resistance and neighborhood opposition, Tree Kelty remained committed to bringing her vision to life. The name 'Black on Black Market' is intentionally provocative, flipping the negative connotations of the phrase 'Black on Black crime' into a symbol of unity, ownership, and purpose. As Kelty explained, 'I wanted to take that language and flip it into something that represents investment, collaboration, and shared success.'

A Space for Collective Progress
During a visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., Kelty encountered a quote from Maggie Lena Walker that solidified her conviction: 'Let us put our monies together and reap the benefits together.' This mantra has guided Black on Black Market's mission to provide a curated shopping experience that highlights the depth and diversity of Black-owned brands. From clothing designers to crochet artists, jewelry makers to hair care and skincare vendors, each business represents a commitment to sustainability, creativity, and collective economics.

A Living Continuation of Black History
Opening during Black History Month, Black on Black Market positioned itself as more than just a retail destination - it became a living continuation of Black history, ownership, and self-determination. One year later, the market continues to stand as a testament to what is possible when Black communities invest in themselves, despite opposition. As Kelty proudly declared, 'This space exists because we chose ownership over permission. Black on Black Market is proof that when we build for ourselves, we don't just survive - we thrive.'

As Black on Black Market celebrates its one-year anniversary, it serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the Black community. By providing a platform for collective economic progress, this marketplace is rewriting the narrative of what's possible when Black people come together to build and support each other. As we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from Tree Kelty's unwavering commitment to her vision - one that has created a space where Black on Black truly means investment, collaboration, and shared success.
