Haiti's Hidden Crisis: Women and Girls Face Explosion of Sexual Violence

Women and girls in Haiti facing In a country already reeling from gang violence, political instability, and humanitarian crises, Haiti is facing an alarming surge in sexual violence against women and girls. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has sounded the alarm, citing a 'daily reality' for many women and girls living in Port-au-Prince.

Deteriorating Conditions Fuel Rise in Sexual Violence
Gang violence and political instability have displaced close to 1.5 million people in Haiti, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. MSF reports that the number of sexual abuse cases has tripled in the last four years, with 70% of victims being women and girls who have been displaced from their homes.

MSF Sounds Alarm on Alarming Surge
At a press conference in Port-au-Prince, MSF's Chief of Mission Diana Manilla expressed her organization's 'alarm and outrage' at the level of sexual and gender-based violence they are witnessing. She emphasized that this is not just a humanitarian crisis but also a human rights issue.

Survivors Share Their Stories
One 29-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, shared her harrowing experience of being attacked by three men while shopping for salt in March 2025. She described feeling like she has a 'scar in her heart' and struggling to live life without truly experiencing it.

MSF Calls for Action
The NGO is urging the Haitian government to allocate more funds for healthcare and services to support survivors of sexual violence. MSF has treated nearly 17,000 patients in the past decade, including over 2,300 in the first nine months of last year.

As Haiti grapples with its multiple crises, it is imperative that attention be paid to the hidden epidemic of sexual violence against women and girls. MSF's call for action must be heeded by the Haitian government and international community to ensure that these vulnerable individuals receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.
