Why some African countries promote their culture wrongly
Colonial hangover Many governments still promote culture the way colonial powers described it—primitive, traditional, frozen in time. Instead of modern African creativity, they push only drums, masks, and villages.
Tourism money mindset Culture is packaged to please foreigners, not to represent reality. So they exaggerate poverty, “tribal” life, or half-naked dancers because that’s what tourists expect.
Government disconnect Leaders and policymakers are often far removed from real cultural practitioners (artists, youths, historians). Decisions are made in offices, not communities.
Ignoring modern African culture Afrobeat, street fashion, slang, film, tech creativity—these are real culture today, but many countries still pretend culture stopped 200 years ago.
Ethnic imbalance One tribe’s culture is promoted as “national culture,” while others are sidelined. That creates resentment and false representation.
Lack of cultural education When citizens themselves aren’t taught the value and depth of their culture, it’s easy for governments to promote shallow or incorrect versions.
Corruption and image control Culture promotion becomes another budget line to chop money, not to preserve truth or identity.
